CDC Updates

Dengue virus transmission has been increasing to epidemic levels in many parts of the tropics and subtropics. Travelers to these areas are at risk of acquiring dengue virus and developing dengue fever (DF) or the severe form of the disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly advises that health care providers in the United States should: 1) consider DF and DHF when evaluating patients returning from dengue-affected areas--both domestic and abroad--who present with an acute febrile illness within two weeks of their return, 2) submit serum specimens for appropriate laboratory testing, and 3) report all presumptive and confirmed cases of DF and DHF to their local or state health department.
The MDCH Division of Immunizations was notified yesterday by Bay County Health Department that a child attendee at Camp Rotary, a Boy Scout camp in Clare Michigan, was diagnosed with pertussis and was infectious while at the camp. The child attended the camp from June 27 - July 3, 2010. There were 217 attendees at the camp from 10 local health jurisdictions: Central Michigan District (25), Bay (26), Clinton (24), Huron (8), Ingham (1), Lenawee (6), Macomb (31), Midland (1), Oakland (84), and Saginaw (11). MDCH, in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommends that: All children and adults who attended the camp should be contacted by their local health department, notified of their exposure, informed about the vaccine, and urged to seek medical attention if they develop any signs or symptoms of pertussis. A template letter for this communication is available on the HAN. Working with Camp Rotary, MDCH has compiled a list of all the camp attendees. Each of the affected local health jurisdictions will receive a fax today that lists contact information for the camp attendees in their jurisdiction. We will also fax a copy of the template letter. The vaccine-preventable disease investigation guidelines are available at www.michigan.gov/immunize under Provider Information. Please contact the Division of Immunizations at 517-335-8159 if you have any questions.
